The Milwaukee Repertory Theater Presents Songs For Nobodies
By Livia Peterson
The Milwaukee Repertory Theater's Stackner Cabaret is a unique venue as it offers up close and personal perspective regardless where one sits, intimate musicals consisting of few performers, and dinner prior to and during the show. Thus, the $1.75 million renovation reiterates the fact the Milwaukee Rep provides excellence in everything it does, administratively and artistically. The modernization expanded the seating and provides spacious area to mingle and such.
In the 2018-2019 Season opener, Joanna Murray-Smith's Songs For Nobodies delivers a little of everything of what we've seen before in the venue such as last season's hysterical Murder For Two to the heartwarming Black Pearl Sings.
Bethany Thomas portrays ten women: five regular women crossing paths with the music legends Judy Garland, Patsy Cline, Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday, and Maria Callas. Music director and pianist Abdul Hamid Royal and cellist Alicia Storin accompany Ms. Thomas.
Anchored by the brilliant performance of Ms. Thomas, the simple and poignant narrative allows us to reflect upon how music touches the soul. From Michelle Lilly's eye catching elegant scenic design to Jared Gooding's lighting impeccably reflecting the mood of a given nobody and music legend, Songs For Nobodies is exhilarating from start to finish.
Songs For Nobodies continues through Sunday, November 4, 2018.
