The Greendale Community Theater Presents Shrek The Musical
By Livia Peterson
The community theater is a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, we are able to witness lesser known actors and designers for the sheer joy. On the other hand, we are able to witness obvious errors, more so than what we would in professional theater. In the Greendale Community Theater's Shrek The Musical, we receive mixed results from both spectrums.
Based on the 2001 film of the same name, the orgre Shrek (Ben Tajnai) and the Donkey (Shawn Holmes) travel to rescue Princess Fiona (Rae Elizabeth Pare). Emma Brockman, Carrie Gray, Mitch Weindorf, Jordan Pollard, among others potray the ensemble, various fairytale characters including the Wicked Witch and Peter Pan.
Mr. Tajnai, Mr. Holmes, and Ms. Pare provide brilliant performances. Yet, the ensemble suffers when they have their individual moments. While the individual segments lack emotional oomph, the ensemble musical pieces shine. The costumes are mediocre at best, but fulfill the obligations of the actors to be in character. Alas, the distracting make up did not offset the aforementioned flaw.
The marvelous and minimal scenic design will immediately catch the eye. The transitions between scenes are extremely slow and thus, significantly affect the pace. Even the fifteen minute intermission may feel prolonged.
However, the lighting design excessively highlight characters during the first act and insufficiently showcase characters during the second act. (There was one lighting problem during the first act, where one actor blurted out along the lines of this was rehearsed, get the light on me in the middle of the song.)
Shrek The Musical is a extravagant production that required additional rehearsals to genuinely satisfy. If anything, the tunes will deliver a smile. C-
Shrek The Musical continues through Sunday, July 29, 2018.
