Interview with Amanda Spears, the creator of the Present All 24 movement

By Livia Peterson

Amanda Spears, Gold Derby contributing writer commenced the #PresentAll24 movement within the film community and after we persisted, the Academy is indeed presenting all twenty four categories. Without further ado, Amanda and I discuss the Academy Awards and what led her to the movement with the magical ending.

Livia Peterson: What is your earliest memory watching the Academy Awards?

Amanda Spears: I remember Oscars night being a special evening. We got to stay up late to see the Disney nominees for Best Song performed. I remember trying to predict the winners in Best Costume and Production Design based on the clip packages.

LP: What was your 90th Academy Awards favorite moment?

AS: Roger Deakins finally winning! That standing ovation proved why below the line categories should be televised.

LP: What motivated you to start #PresentAll24 movement?

AS: I just was astounded that this was where the Academy decided to draw the line in the sand. If there’s no host then you have the time to present all 24 categories. This is about tradition not ratings. And every category should be presented during the telecast.

LP: Did you expect the hashtag/movement to go viral within the film community?

AS: No. I was completely overwhelmed by the positivity within the community. Before #PresentAll24 began I had around 250 Twitter followers and now I’m close to 500.  I may have started it and committed to tweeting every day till the decision was reversed. But everyone who kept tweeting at the Academy and kept this hashtag going deserves credit also.

LP: What was your reaction when the movement went viral?

AS: This is crazy! It’s insane when Film Twitter is working towards doing something positive. The people in the industry that have reached out to me privately to thank me means more than anything I could have hoped for.

LP: How has the movement impacted you as a writer of awards season website?

AS: It hasn’t really impacted my writing. I hope I might get some more opportunities in the future. But my predictions might have been impacted.

LP: Why do you think your movement had such a powerful impact within the film community?

AS: Because it was about inclusion and not exclusion. When we as a society work towards doing something positive and for the better the chances of it working out are better.

LP: What are you most looking forward to during the 91st Academy Awards?

AS: Best Supporting Actress because it’s a nail bites. Also not just because the category was almost bumped but I’m looking forward to Best Editing since this could give us a clue toward what film wins Best Picture.

LP: Lastly, do you ever think we will be needing #PresentAll24 in the near future, as the Academy has reversed decisions so many times during this awards season?

AS: I hope not. I hope they realized that they have dedicated fans that want to see all 24 awards presented regardless. But I’m ready to start the movement again if necessary!!
