“Ghostbusters” (2016) honors “Ghostbusters” (1984) with dignity and hell yes, it does not ruin your beloved childhood. (Trust me; my job does not involve lying to my readers.)
Based on the film of the same name by Ivan Reitman, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis, paranormal devotees Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) and Abigail “Abby” Yates (Melissa McCarthy), nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon), and subway employee Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) collaborate to destroy the ghosts in Manhattan, New York. The receptionist is Kevin Beckman (Chris Hemsworth)
Wiig, McCarthy, and Jones remain in the wheelhouse and simultaneously, provide fresh shtick. However, the genuine scene stealer is…McKinnon. McKinnon is a sassy woman here. Whereas the fellow ladies are hesitant to attempt unconventional humor, McKinnon ain’t afraid to do so. Hemsworth achieves almost nothing to enhance the females; his only purpose is eye candy (hate to break it to you).
Most reboots are forgettable, but helmer Paul Feig reminds me why I love “Ghostbusters” (1984). I am not stating the film is perfect – it offers some obvious faults: Formulaic yet repetitive narrative (given the nostalgia factor) and some jokes misfire. Yet I enjoyed every minute during my viewing. I continually compared it to the original (could not help it); however, I frequently excused it.
I understand “Ghostbusters” (2016) hatred is everywhere via social media. Why the profound hostility? I am able to assure you: The reboot does not surpass “Ghostbusters” (1984). The Sigourney Weaver cameo during the conclusion is the cherry on the cake.
Who you gonna call? You may call the male Ghostbusters. I am calling the female Ghostbusters and supporting the endeavor. “Ghostbusters II”, anyone? Anyway, what I am trying to convey is stop the dislike and provide the film a freaking chance. (By that I mean, do not cause a box office failure.)
“Ghostbusters” (2016) achieves the Millennial Generation Ghostbusters status. Continue to call 'em. B+
