2017 Milwaukee Film Festival: Stumped

2017 Milwaukee Film Festival: Stumped

By Livia Peterson

Robin Berghaus’s brilliant and uplifting documentary chronicles filmmaker Will Lautzenheiser confronting a bacterial infection that causes amputation to all limbs and utilizing standup comedy as therapy. Meanwhile, Mr. Lautzenheiser approves to undergo the nearly unprecedented, experimental double arm transplant in spite of the resplendent risks to regain his independence. Lautzenheiser is such an inspiration to all (even more so in person). It is difficult to imagine what Mr. Lautzenheiser endured and yet, easy to root for him. “Stumped” flawlessly taps into the zeitgeist in terms of the healthcare system. If one cannot relate to Mr. Lautzenheiser’s individual story, one is able to instantly connect with the significance of healthcare. B+
